Rhondda 470, 470UNY was a AEC Regent V 2MD3RA / Northern Counties H37/28F new in January 1964, the second of a batch of ten delivered in that month and the previous one.
National Bus Company instructions had merged Rhondda with Western Welsh on 1 January 1971 but fleetnames were unchanged initially, the Regent remained 470 then became H264, lasting until January 1978.
Blaenrhondda terminus is also the end of the habited (main) Rhondda Fach, further north the A4061 heads "over the mountain" to Hirwaun and westward the railway went under the mountain to Blaengwynfi and Cymmer Afan via the longest tunnel wholly in Wales until a collapse on 26 February 1968. I took 470 from Pontypridd on the trunk 520 route and not wanting to be stranded, some of the way back also! Many enthusiasts will have seen this destination, Ferndale and Maerdy on blinds but I'm quite pleased to have also visited all three in the past, living history.
