Newcastle 177, 177AVK, a Leyland PD3/1 with Weymann H40/32R body new in 1957.
Newcastle were early operators of PD3's, taking ten into stock in late 1957. Three of them soon settled into the NCT car workings on service 11, having quite a long reign until replaced by Atlanteans. Compared to the Tynemouth examples which operated alongside them until they were in turn replaced with new Atlanteans in 1960, the NCT examples were rather cheap and cheerful with an almost garish red based interior. A lack of any opening windows in the upper saloon apart from 'push-out' front vents and those rather ineffective extractors in the last bay resulted in passive smoking being compulsory if travelling upstairs! Running every ten minutes from the Haymarket, I would often let the NCT bus go, preferring to wait for a Percy Main machine.
