The latest addition to the trolleybus fleet at Sandtoft is former Notts & Derby 353, NNU234, a Weymann H32/26R bodied BUT 9611T dating from 1949 which has been purchased by the Museum from the West of England Transport Collection (with whom it had resided since 2011) and arrived at Sandtoft on 25 April, 62 years to the day from the closure of the Notts & Derby system. The entire N&D fleet was sold to Bradford for further service and 353 re-entered service as BCT 770 on 1 July 1953. It was withdrawn on 31 October 1963 contemporaneously with the withdrawal of trolleybuses from the section beyond Saltaire to Nab Woods, Bingley and Crossflatts.
It was purchased by the NTA and towed to Coven (near Wolverhampton) on 16 June 1967 minus its traction motor which was retained by BCT. In May ’68, following an attack by vandals at the Coven site, it was moved to Willington, Derbyshire. On 4 September 1971 it was towed back to Thornbury Works for an identical traction motor to be fitted and other mechanical repairs. On 11 September 1971, it was taken to a site at Weybridge where it remained until 25 November 1972 when it was moved to Warnham near Crawley. It was purchased by the Bournemouth Passenger Transport Association and moved to Mallard Road, Bournemouth on 15 August 1983. On 29 May 1993, it was moved to a hangar at Hurn Airport and again in September 1998 to Holton Heath, Poole. Following a considerable amount of bodywork restoration, the transformation from Bradford 770 to N&D 353 was completed by 1986.
A ‘ring-fenced’ maintenance fund has been established to provide for the necessary work which will be necessary to get 353 ready for operational service; if anyone wishes to contribute, I can supply details of the necessary contact.
[The details of 353’s peripatetic existence since 1967 have been précised from a piece in ‘Sandtoft Scene’ (the magazine for members of the Trolleybus Museum) written by Financial Director Francis Whitehead with assistance from Dave Hall - no relation!]
