Another of the four all-Leyland PD2/20s bought from Midland Red by Lough Swilly in 1967, 67, SHA421, carries the later grey and dark red livery in this 1968 photo at Bridge End, where Northern Ireland meets the Republic on the road from Londonderry/Derry to Letterkenny. It was withdrawn in 1975 and survived on private property until 1992 as a storeshed.
Within 12 months of this photo the tranquil scene here was replaced by a heavily fortified military position in response to the outbreak of the province’s ‘Troubles’ in 1969. Thankfully today one barely notices the transition, only the different road signs marking the border, and Customs checks are also a thing of the past.
