This is a fairly rare photograph of Midland Red single-decker type LA 3977, OHA977, parked at Central Works in Birmingham. As part of the development programme of ever lighter single deckers 3977 was built in 1950 using chassisless construction and Light Alloy components wherever possible.
Used by Carlyle Works for experimental purposes it did not enter traffic until 1952. Several engine type changes later it was allocated to Wellington where it remained until delicenced at the end of September 1960 and in this photograph is seen awaiting its fate. This came in December 1961 when it was sold for scrap.
The ‘open-top’ LD8 on the left of the picture is believed to be 4050, SHA450. She has clearly come into sharp contact with a low bridge and has lost most of the upper deck in the process. Allocated to Bearwood depot for most of its working life, 4050 was de-licensed in April 1961 and was not back on the road until July 1961.
