In 1961 the Midland Red bus company were keen to convince the Ministry of Transport and the Metropolitan Police that it was both possible and safe to operate buses longer than 30 feet in and out of London. To demonstrate the point they took an S8 single decker and lengthened it to 45 feet. With a police escort, the vehicle made several clandestine visits to London at weekends. The vehicle converted was 3220, JHA820.
After the trials were completed 3220 was converted back to a standard length and returned to service in August 1961. The campaign was partly successful because, soon after, the maximum permitted length was increased to 36 feet.
