I didn't realise it at the time but being employed by Midland Red at Carlyle Road works put me in a fairly privileged position as far as taking photographs was concerned! This is a rare picture of Midland Red type ONC Coach 2286, FHA418, in its final form. Built originally in 1936 the ONCs were the mainstay of the Midland Red coaching fleet until well after the Second World War.
However by the time this photograph was taken all had been withdrawn with the exception of 2286, which was retained for special private hire duties where an opened top vehicle was required. The Motorway Coach style boards above the guttering on the side of the coach were there to ensure that the company name was prominent when successful football teams were filmed touring their home towns in it!
