Manchester 4429, NNB239, one of eighty Daimler CVG6Ks with Metro Cammell H32/28R bodies delivered in 1953/4, seen here in Parker Street, was the first Manchester bus to be spray painted, being so treated in February 1957.
Spray painting was introduced as part of a drive to reduce costs. The livery was simplified to have just the between decks cream band with the brown edging between the red and the cream being omitted as well as the mudguards becoming red. This reduced the amount of time applying masking before the painting took place and removing it afterwards. Another of the batch in normal livery is in the background.
