Seen approaching Aldgate Minories on Route 723 from Tilbury Ferry in the autumn of 1968 is Green Line RMC1497, 497CLT, in the unfortunate simplified livery applied during 1967 which eliminated the light green window lining and modified the grille below the destination screen to allow a continuous light green band across the front.
Over the last half century the Great Wen has capitulated to the blight of excrescent architectural ego statements that now render the exact location of the picture difficult to establish. With characteristic LT vacillation, RMCs replaced the longer RCL coaches on the 723 in December 1967, only to be ousted by the return of RCLs in October 1969 as diminishing patronage of the Green line network saw RMCs demoted to bus work throughout the fleet. During 1978/79 the bulk of the now London Country RMC fleet was sold to London Transport, mostly for conversion to training buses.
RMC1497 has survived into preservation.
