London Transport AEC Routemaster / Park Royal RM511, WLT511, allocated to Highgate, brand new on the new Route 253 to Tottenham Court Road. The route formed an upside-down U across North London via Stamford Hill until eventually split as the 253 and 254. For many months in 1961 both Highgate (HT) and Edmonton (EM) Garages worked the 253 although the latter was a fair way off the line of the route. Later Stamford Hill (SF) Garage replaced Edmonton. In the 1970s no less than 5 garages worked on the route.
Note the upper case via blinds and the RT on the 23 in the background. The overhead wires are awaiting removal - last day of use by the 653 was 31st January 1961.
