Metropolitan Electric Tramways 330 was one of the prototype Felthams built by UCC, entering service in October 1929. It differed from other prototypes (and the subsequent production batches) by being designed for Pay As You Enter operation (rear entrance, front exit).
Quoting from “The Felthams” by K C Blacker (Dryhurst Publications, 1962), there was a “conductor standing by a ticket machine mounted near the entrance from the standing lobby to the lower saloon. In order that upper saloon passengers should pass the conductor the staircases were reversed so that every passenger, including those for the upper deck, had to pass through the rear lobby. The standing area was thus reduced and the seating capacity on the upper deck lowered by two due to the repositioning.”
It spent most of its early working life on MET/LPTB route 40 from Whetstone to Cricklewood (as seen) where this PAYE experiment soon proved to be totally impracticable and normal fare collection was introduced soon after.
This view is an enlargement from a recently purchased Photochrom (sic) Co. commercial postcard. It looks to be seen in its early period of operation with the “Front Exit Car” sign prominent (other subsequent Felthams had "Passengers Alight Front & Rear End" signs.) Unlike the other prototype Felthams, which were withdrawn or scrapped in 1936, 330 (later becoming LPTB 2167) remained in service until scrapped in December 1949.
