For many years trams from Middleton and Belle Isle used to turn in the city centre on their way in from Meadow Lane by turning left from Leeds Bridge into Swinegate, continue via Bishopsgate Street, Neville Street, and Great Wilson Street to reach Meadow Lane for the outward journey. Trams leaving the depot to take up service could not, due to the sharpness of the curve required, reach the correct track in Swinegate. They left Swinegate Depot by using a less sharp curve on to the inbound track from City Square, loaded and then regained the correct track by using the facing crossover ahead of Feltham 504 in this photograph.
