 209. 569UVX
In the 1960s a large proportion of Wallace Arnold passengers for European holidays were conveyed from Leeds to Southend Airport for the Channel crossing. This was a busy operation often involving six or seven coaches in a day. Breakdowns were commendably rare but on one occasion a WA vehicle failed in Southend and Eastern National PL344, 569UVX, was loaned to save the day. This fine coach is shown leaving Leeds with more tourists the following morning at the start of its "repatriation" journey.

This shot of former ENOC 2805, BVX681B, shows its peculiar half-open top format, which Paul believes was a London Bus Export creation. This bus was something of a mystery until he caught up with it in the metal at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, and was able to check the chassis number to prove identity, rather than believe the number plate fitted at the time - BHN658B. The bus was initially sold on upon withdrawal in 1980 to the National Playbus Association, Bristol, who then placed the vehicle with Gwent Community Services in Griffithstown as a playbus.

No, Paul couldn't believe it either! A chance encounter en route to an early morning meeting in London (and with his camera on board too), found him taking this shot near Kings Cross early on the morning of January 23rd, 1992. RHK346D, former 2861, became ENOC driver trainer 9010 in 1979, was withdrawn in 1981, and passed to Gwent Community Services apparently converted to a mobile toilet.

 337. RVW393D
RVW293D is one of two former ENOC FLFs in use as mobile homes in Aberdeenshire. The current owner acquired both from Northern Scottish many years ago, but although converted to semi open top mobile homes they remain in active use and in good condition. As you can see, they are kept in premises that many an operator would die for! The additional pipework on the front is apparently to aid cooling!

 340. STW763D
Ugly as the back-end of a bus? Actually, I always thought the rear of an FLF to be quite handsome - more so when the rear upturned 'T' destination blinds were fitted. This view from April 1996, outside the Top Deck workshop in Chelsea sees former 2913, WWC743F, alongside former 2875, STW763D, being prepared for the summer season of trips and tours.

 342. SVX277D
SVX277D was one of the 1966 Eastern National FLFs that made the long trek North of the Border in exchange for a Bristol VR in September 1971. Between then and 1980, SVX served with W Alexander & Sons (Midland) Ltd, before being sold on to dealer Martins of Middlewich, then to Castrol Oils, Ellesmere Port, where it resided for many years.

 343. SVX278D
New in 1966, FLF6G 2879, SVX278D, was swapped in October 1971 to W Alexander & Sons (Midland), in Falkirk Scotland, as part of the well documented exchange for VRTs. Midland operated it until 1980, and then sold it on to a Scout Group in Aberdeen.

 344. AEV812F
One of the last batch of Eastern National FLFs overtaking one of the first batch! SD2918, AEV812F, passing one of the nn TVX batch. Some of the evolvement of the FLF body can be seen in this photo, the most noticeable being that the newer FLF has only one cream band, has cream rather than black window rubbers and is longer (with longer rear side windows).

 345. AVW403F
The very next day after Southend Transport’s last PD3 made its final run, Hadleigh allocated 2944 was used on all day service as a similar farewell operation, again complete with Richard Delahoy-produced headboard which included an EN fleetname once on the side of a coach FLF.
Photo taken Saturday 1 August 1981, Shoebury East Beach

 346. AVW403F
Later on the final day of FLF operation at Hadleigh, more “last day” notices were added either side of the destination, claiming 2944 was “The Last Half Cab Bus in Southend” (forgive Richard for distorting history!! – but who would have expected RMs to appear in the town 10 years later?). The shot was taken just into August 2nd, 1981 as 2944 ran into Hadleigh for the final time.

Do not adjust your set! Here is WNO973F (former 2885) in April 1987 at the Spitalfields depot of Stagecoach. This bus was new in September 1967, and after withdrawal in 1981 passed through APT (dealer), Bracebridge Heath to Ensign (dealer), Purfleet in January 1982, then to W Irvine of Law in February 1982, to Stagecoach, Perth, in January 1984, and was full broken up by Stagecoach by June 1988.

 361. WVX525F
Eastern National WVX525F (2898) was the first of the FLF6LXs to be converted for One Man Operation following an accident in September 1972. In the process it lost its Cave Brown Cave heating system. It was sold to W H Fowler & Sons of Holbeach Drove in December 1982, and then to Joe Sykes in Carlton.

Former Eastern National WVX528F (2901) is seen here in September 1987 in the Stagecoach "graveyard" in Perth - it came to Stagecoach in May 1983, via North (dealer) , Sherburn, in June 1982, then Rapsons of Brora Brora. By September 1988, WVX was broken up completely.

Seen in the yard of Ensign Bus in 1988, former Eastern National 2903, WVX530F, was sold on to Norths (dealer) in 1981, then quickly to Ensign and to Bus Fare Ltd, Albury, as a mobile hospitality unit
Photo taken 1988

 373. WVX531F
This sad sight of former 2904 at Norths (dealer) in Sherburn near Leeds is particularly pointed as this was never supposed to happen. WVX was sold on to Norths from ENOC in June 1982, and saw service with the nearby Knottingley Emblems Jazz Band. A frequent visitor to Norths, this bus was wrongly diagnosed as having a cracked engine block in late 1990, so the Emblems got a new bus, and WVX was put out to pasture - but the inevitable happened.
Photo taken September 1991, Norths (dealer), Sherburn near Leeds

 374. WVX532F
Many ex-ENOC FLFs were sold on through dealers to the young Stagecoach company in Perth in 1982/3. Former 2905, WVX532F, was one that lasted longer than most. Paul even contemplated buying this bus from Stagecoach when he was looking for parts for AVX975G, but the price strangely increased between phone calls by £2000, and so WVX stayed in Perth. Seen here in November 1988, breaking up on site for spares was well underway.

Nearest to the camera are the remains of AEV812F (ex-2918), which was sadly destroyed by fire late in 1983

 376. WWC742F
WWC742F was a 1967 semi-Automatic FLF6LX numbered 2912 in the ENOC Fleet, and was withdrawn in June 1982, passing to Norths (dealer) of Sherburn. By August 1982, it had joined the fleet of Scottish independent Wilson's Supreme Travel of Carnwath. During its time with Wilson's, WWC lost its front upper deck opening windows, and several hoppers and sliders on each side. Not exactly sure when, but this bus passed through London Bus Export Company and was exported to the US.

By May 1985, however, 2920 had been sold on again to John Waddingtons of Leeds, who used the bus as a mobile showroom for their board games.

This bus was one of the ENOC FLFs converted for OMO operation, but in April 1979 was loaned to United Counties, then in June 1979 to Alder Valley, before returning to ENOC in November 1979. Never reinstated, 2928 was sold to Ensign (dealer) in December 1980, and exported to Hong Kong in May 1981. It joined the Citybus fleet with number B21, and was converted to open top by January 1985.

 392. AVW398F
AVW398F was new to Eastern National in July 1968 as 2929. In 1973, it was one of the FLFs converted by ENOC for one man operation, but saw little service in that guise. By December 1982, it had been sold on through dealer Norths of Sherburn to independent Fowler's of Holbeach Drove. It was withdrawn in July 1988, and sold to dealer Joe Sykes of Carlton by January 1989.

When withdrawn in 1981, it was sold on to Norths, Sherburn, then by October 1983 had passed to Horsell Graphics, Leeds, as a mobile exhibition unit, and toured Europe. By April 1985, it was back at Norths, and was sold in 1986 to Moodies Exhibition Services in Petersfield, with whom it served under various liveries, including Hamlyn Books, the "Bugs Bunny Road Show", Rabbit Phones, Lorius/Seiko watches and Enza New Zealand Apples.

Paul Harrison's personal favourite - mainly because he's owned it since 1988! AVX was new to ENOC as coach 2614 in August 1968. One of only 5 FLFs to get a "G" registration, the last Lodekka chassis numerically, ENOC's last new half-cab bus, and one of only 5 31ft, semi automatic Coaches were the attributes that led him to rescue AVX from Ensign (dealer) as it was due to be exported to Australia. AVX was converted to bus specification in 1975, and passed in 1982 to an Eastern National Preservation Group member who had sold it on to Ensign by 1985, where it lay until the successful rescue bid in 1988.
