LHN823 is a Bristol L5G with ECW B35R body which was new to United in October 1949 as their BLO423; in the 1951 renumbering scheme, it became BG381 and it is this identity which it carries these days.

United rebuilt this 1949 Bristol L5G to front entrance in 1957, losing four seats in the rebuild, to use as a one man bus. BG413, LHN860, is seen at the Beamish Festival of Transport picking up passengers at the museum entrance. The destination is a relic of its time in the TV series Heartbeat. The vehicle behind is a replica AEC B type.

United Auto BH58, SHN714, built 1953 as KSW5G was re-engined with a Bristol 6 cylinder version around 1960. It is passing Cargo Fleet garage 6 months after the formation of Teesside Municipal Transport. The trolleybuses had about 4 years left before withdrawal.

One of a batch new to Southern Vectis as 508, KDL404, this 1954 LD6G first moved from the sunshine island to United Counties at Luton then to United at Scarborough and finally, after conversion to a trainer bus for United. Those of the batch that made the last hurdle to trainer bus (others fell by the wayside on the way) replaced more recently built United LD6Bs.

It passed to United Counties (939) in 1973, then was initially loaned to United Automobile in 1975 before being acquired by them, remaining in the green livery. It became a UAS Driver Training vehicle in 1976.

The first picture was a Tynemouth Atlantean at St Mary's lighthouse and too poor to admit to!!

Like most operators, from the late 50s onwards, United Auto embraced the concept of one man operation but the part played in this conversion by a little-known operator in a remote Northumberland valley is often overlooked. 18BHN, seen here, was a Bristol LS6B with ECW C39F bodywork, new to United in June 1956.

While browsing through the United gallery, I came across a picture of 18BHN, ex United but then with J.H.Thomson and thus solved the mystery of the above sighting"somewhere on the M6" which had eluded me for years. I had assumed it was a contractor or commercial garage outfit (non -PSV).

Bedlington & District 996CHN was new to United in May 1957 as BGS8 before general renumbering to GS8 in November 1964. It was a Bristol LL5G with ECW FB39C to the Queen Mary design but with bus seats. The chassis was extended and rebuilt from GHN991 an L5G with fleet number BLO191 later BG205, the body was 8ft wide hence broader than the chassis.

In the United re-numbering exercise of January 1969 it received the number 4001.

Recent posts have speculated on the purpose of the rear "flaps " on these particular ECW bodies and on this journey, they are opened, for extra ventilation?? L244 is also sporting rear wheel discs, but I can't recall if others had those. Something too, for the car and pub spotters!

In 1979 West Yorkshire had a severe vehicle crisis and to help offset this a number of United single deckers were bought. One of these is seen in West Yorkshire's Leeds bus station. Originally R272, RHN272F, in the United fleet this 1968 Bristol RELL6G carries "local coach" dual purpose livery with 50 coach seats in a bus shell.

For all rear view fans, United fans and Bristol fans, here is ex United L262, THN262F, still in Tilling red/cream but with Western fleetnames and adverts standing at Anderston Bus Station, Glasgow in March 1973. The conductor has obviously realised there is such a thing as a rear number screen, and has correctly displayed it for the service to Eaglesham. Comparing the reds, there doesn't seem to be much difference in this slide anyway between Western and United.

United bought their first Bristol VR in 1969, 601 WHN411G. After withdrawal in 1980 the bus had a number of owners including Crosville and Lincolnshire before joining the fleet of Silcox of Pembroke Dock in 1986 who ran it for 11 years until 1997 when it was acquired for preservation.

It had originally been 2254 in the Western SMT fleet but had been exchanged in 1973 for a Bristol FLF and, after running initially with a normal body, was converted to open-top for the Scarborough seafront service 109 between the Corner Cafe and the Spa.
