Southend PD3 315, PHJ954, was taken by a group of drivers and conductors on the Trans Pennine Rally in 1974, driving up overnight on Saturday night and returning the following night. I think I took this pic at the start point at Belle Vue in Manchester.
I was prompted to add this photo after hearing about the tragic death of Philip Carlton. He worked for Southend Transport at the time and I'm pretty sure he is the person standing nearest to the cab of 315. It's a very long time ago now, but I am reasonably sure it's Philip.
On the left is Malcolm McKinnon, an old school friend - together, we ran the Transport Society at Southend High School for Boys. Just appearing on the very left edge of the photo is Percy Nichols, ST's driving instructor - 315 was his bus at the time and he was very proud and protective of it.
