Southampton relied on open top trams for many years as they had to negotiate the mediaeval Bargate which was to small to allow the use of covered cars. In the thirties, the Southampton manager solved the problem and a batch of covered cars of modern appearance entered service. Car 45 harks back to the earlier arrangements and dates from 1903.
This was one of the earliest preserved trams in the UK it is seen in service at the Crich Tramway Museum
