Taken many years before the usual pictures on the site, a scene at Worthing from the 1920s; the rear vehicle is Southdown TS3 CD4856 No 56.

Provincial CD7045 is a Leyland G7 with Short O27/24RO body work and originated with Southdown in 1922. She moved to Provincial in 1934 and was set aside for preservation in 1946. In that preserved and immaculate state she was a regular performer at the annual Gosport carnival.

Preserved Southdown 517, UF1517, is a 1927 Dennis 30cwt with Short all metal B19R bodywork. This vehicle normally resides at Amberley chalk pits museum, but is seen here in West Worthing en route to the 2002 Worthing Bus Rally.

UF4813, preserved Southdown 813 is a 1929 Leyland Titan TD1 with Brush O27/24RO bodywork. This vehicle is unique in that it has been owned by Southdown / NBC / Stagecoach from new.

There was a superb selection of preserved Southdown vehicles at the Southdown Centenary Rally from a 1927 Dennis single decker up to Queen Marys and VRs. Perhaps the most interesting to me, since I had not previously seen it, was 1930 Tilling Stevens single decker UF6805. I believe this is normally kept at Amberley Chalk Pits Museum.

Southdown 966 and 968, AUF666 and AUF668, were Leyland TD3 Titans new in 1934 with Short H26/24R bodies. Both were rebodied after the war - 966 with a Beadle H28/26R in 1949 and 968 with an East Lancs H28/24R in 1947. These were from a batch 964-975 which were the first oil-engined vehicles in the fleet.

Southdown, Brighton 149, CCD949, was a Leyland TD4c new in 1936 with a Beadle H28/24R body. The torque converter was removed in 1946, when it was fitted with a conventional gearbox and clutch, and it was rebodied in 1950 with an East Lancs H28/26R body, being seen in Pool Valley at Brighton.

CUF404 is a Leyland Cub KPZ1, one of a batch of three new in July 1936 with a Harrington C14F body to Southdown Motor Services, no. 4. When new they had a folding canvas roof, but were rebuilt around 1939 with glass quarter lights and a sliding roof.

Southdown 0181, 184CD (trade plate), originally bus 181, EUF181, a 1937 Leyland Titan TD5 with Beadle 53 seat body, converted to a breakdown tender in October 1956. It was sold in 1974.

Southdown 185L, EUF185, a 1937 Leyland Titan TD5 with Beadle 52 seat lowbridge bodywork is seen at Pool Valley, Brighton about to operate a journey on service 23. According to Ken's original 1950 Ian Allan ABC on Southdown, the service ran to Crawley, but the bus is set up for a short working to Haywards Heath.

New as Southdown 196 in 1938, EUF196, a Leyland TD5 with Beadle L26/26R body had passed to Hutfield, Gosport in March 1956, who fitted platform doors, to T.P.E. (dlr), Macclesfield in 1966 and to 11th Southgate Scout Group in August 1966.

Southdown 1451, FCD251, a 1938 Leyland Tiger TS8 with Harrington B32R coachwork is seen at Brighton's Pool Valley ready to work a service 30 journey to Chelwood Common (for East Grinstead) according to the Ian Allan ABC. Particularly impressive is the side destination arrangement. A similar bus is parked alongside.

Dennis single decker "Polly", FUF181 is branded "Eastbourne Old (Peoples?) Welfare Council" and is parked in the Eastbourne garage. It was one of a pair of Dennis Falcons with Harrington B30C bodywork delivered to Southdown in 1939 and survives today.

Southdown 253, GCD353, Leyland Titan TD5 of 1939, originally with Park Royal 52 seat body, was rebodied by Northern Counties after the war. It is seen working a Brighton local service.

This pre-war Leyland TD was found lurking in the bucolic wilderness of Pulhams Yard in the Cotswolds in May 1963. Believed to be ex-Southdown 261, but any help with the history of this vehicle and on Pulhams in general would be much appreciated.

GCD361 was a Leyland TD5 in the fleet of Talbott, Moreton-in-Marsh. It had an East Lancs H28/26R body which replaced the original Park Royal H28/24R one in 1950 and had been 261 in the Southdown fleet when new in 1939.

A bit of a mystery. Southdown TD GCD48 appears to be preserved, so this is probably at a rally, perhaps in the early 1970s. The sign for “pleasure flights” and the queue of people indicate an airfield, but where?

Prior to the embargo on non BTC companies buying ECW coach work a number of BET companies bought Leylands with the body style normally associated with Bristol L chassis. Southdown 677, GUF727, is a 1947 Leyland Tiger PS1/1, a good example of the body chassis combination.

Southdown HCD451 was the last of twenty-five E.C.W. C31R bodied Leyland PS1s new in 1947. It was new as 1251 and was reclassified as DP31R and renumbered 699 in 1956 and is seen at Ascot presumably having come from Bognor.

Southdown, Brighton received twenty-five Leyland PD1s with Leyland H28/26R bodies in 1947 and 294, HCD894, the fourth in the batch, was seen in Pool Valley at Brighton.

In April 1964 Shaw Bros., Byers Green acquired HCD904 from Southdown, where it had been number 304. It was a Leyland PD1 with a Leyland H28/26R body new in 1947 and is seen in Spennymoor. After withdrawal in June 1967 it passed to Hartwood Finance (dealer), Barnsley in May 1967 (both dates according to P.S.V. Circle Fleet History PA19).

Southdown 351H, JCD51, a 1948 all-Leyland PD2/1 is pictured operating service 7 which according to the 1950 Ian Allan ABC was a circular service based on Worthing and serving South Lancing and Lancing Manor. The destination reads Lancing Manor and the picture is captioned Worthing Diamond Jubilee which suggests 1950 as Worthing became a Borough in 1890.

Beadle bodied Leyland PS1, HUF290, seen here with McLennan, Spitalfield had been new as Southdown 1290 in 1949 as C32R. Along with the rest of the batch (1290-1298) it was rebuilt by Beadle in 1954/5 to FC32R. Acquired from Rennie, Cairneyhill in June 1963 and rebuilt to FC35F by McLennan it was withdrawn in 1968.

From little acorns. KUF700 was Southdown 700, a 1950 Leyland Titan PD2/12 with Northern Counties FCH28/16RD bodywork and was intended to be the first of a fleet of such vehicles for use on express services. It began work on the Eastbourne/London service but was a spectacular failure. It rolled badly, was overweight and sluggish and by 1952 it was in use for private hires and bus work.

Southdown 1508, LUF508, was a 1951 Leyland Royal Tiger PSU1/13 fitted with an East Lancs B41F body. This vehicle was originaly fitted with a rear entrance, but the whole batch were converted to front entrance in 1960/61.

The vehicle was about to be taken to Victoria Road Works in Portslade for a repaint from which it emerged all green and re-entered service as fleetnumber 1683. Withdrawn circa 1967/68.

This one was particularly low-profile, even though I saw more of it than most because it was kept for a while at our premises in Greenfield. 793, RUF193, was a Leyland Titan PD2/12 with an East Lancs H31/28RD body and, as I apparently saw it in my bus-spotting days I suspect it was based at the western end of Southdown's territory.

OK Motor Services had a number of former Southdown Queen Mary Leyland PD3's. The oldest of them were XUF847-XUF849 which were 1959 Leyland Titan PD3/4 models with Northern Counties FH39/30F bodywork. Alongside 849 in this depot shot is former Tyneside PTE (Newcastle Corporation) 212, 212JVK a Weymann H44/34F bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1. OK obviously found the Queen Mary's to their liking as they went back for three later models already pictured on the site.

Morris Bros of Swansea ran a contract between Swansea rail station and the DVLC offices using a varied selection of buses. One fine example was former Southdown XUF851 seen parked in High Street just south of the junction with Powell Street waiting to go down to the station.

Cleveland Transit purchased the former Southdown 417, 417DCD, which arrived at Stockton carrying its original restoration and roof, but was reregistered to PRX189B and entered service in open top form as a private hire vehicle. Carrying fleet number 500 it is seen in the company of East Yorkshire Routemaster 801 the former RM732 WLT732 at Ludlam Street depot Bradford on the occasion of a West Yorkshire Transport Museum open day. Happily the Queen Mary is now preserved as Southdown 417 but still carrying the PRX189B registration. Many of the DCD series registrations were retained by Southdown and put on Leyland Nationals in 1981 and subsequently moved on to Leyland Tiger coaches in 1984 and 417DCD was one of the latter.

There was a discussion last year on this site about Southdown PD3 HCD356E so here is a very recent picture. I always think Queen Marys look sad and this one seems to be crying green tears. However it will I'm sure be fully restored as it has joined several such vehicles owned by one person.

Southdown 368, HCD368E, a 1967 built Leyland PD3/4 with Northern Counties FH39/30F bodywork seen when brand new. This batch of 'panoramics' were quickly nicknamed 'greenhouses' as the upper deck became very hot in plesant sunny weather. Southdown's solution was to remove one of the ventilators from the roofs of convertible open-top PD3s and insert it into the front dome of this batch.

PUF173H was one of a batch of 30 Leyland Leopard PSU3/1RT with Northern Counties DP49F bodies delivered to Southdown between August and November 1969, this particular vehicle in September, this colour scheme was only applied to these vehicles and was later replaced by NBC green and white. Only a handful of bodies of this style were delivered to any other operators.
