Preserved former London General K424, XC8059, an AEC K-type with LGOC O24/22RO body, new in 1920.
Seen here taking part in the Halifax Charity Gala procession in 1968, which in that particular year was substantially augmented by a procession of preserved buses and coaches as part of Halifax Corporation's 70th Anniversary celebrations. Halifax's last GM - Geoffrey Hilditch - will be noted casually posing on the bonnet.
Following behind can just be seen the department's 1961 LWB Land Rover Series IIA service vehicle 405, 9173YG, bought secondhand in 1966 to replace an Austin LD van damaged in an accident. Known amongst the engineering staff as the 'Circus Van' it too was written off in an accident in 1970.
The white painted building just behind the Land Rover on the far side was at one time the town centre premises of coachbuilder Woodall Nicholson, which for a short period after the war built a few PSV bodies as well as rebuilding a large number of prewar Bristols for United Automobile, though they were better known for their hearses and high-class limousine coachwork. Later concentrating their business further down the bottom end of town at Well Lane, the building was taken over by Central Garage, the local Standard-Triumph dealer. It has since been demolished to make a car park owned by O&C Estates, which own many of the buildings in this part of town. The O&C refers to Oliver and Charles Holdsworth, founders of Hebble Motor Services.
