The oldest bus in the South East Bus Festival was 1929 Leyland TD1 ex-Jersey 24, J1199, now registered SV6107. Although looking a little shabby, it seems to be structurally and mechanically sound and was happily carrying passengers on the internal bus service round the site. Here it is leaving the rally site on its way to the car park entrance.

Leyland Lion RU8678 appears to be in use as a promotional vehicle at a bus rally at Stratford-on-Avon in, probably, 1970. It was a Leyland PLSC3 with Leyland B35F body, new to Hants & Dorset in 1929 and withdrawn in 1938. Does anyone know anything more of the history of this vehicle and is it still with us?

Photographed at Grouville, this is believed to be the Leyland TD1 with a Leyland H27/24R body, new as a Leyland demonstrator registered TF2678 in 1930, which was acquired by Jersey Motor Transport in December 1931, registered J6041 and given fleet number 39. It was withdrawn in May 1960, passing to Jersey Motor Spares as an office/store and then to a farm at La Route des Cotils, Grouville by the late 1960s.

TJ6760 is Lytham St. Anne's 24 (previously a Leyland demonstrator), a Leyland Lion LT5A with Leyland B32R from 1934. It was imported in a poor state from Ontario, Canada in 1998, and is seen having repairs carried out. Body restoration was done in 2006.

Kippax and District bought their first double decker in 1935, a Leyland Titan TD4 with an early metal framed Leyland body. Numbered 8, AWT128, it gave eighteen years service being withdrawn in 1953.

Theobald's had two ex Plymouth Leyland TD5s, built in 1938 as TD5c (torque converter transmission) with Weymann lowbridge bodies. Of the original total of 50, eight were rebodied, most unusually by Leyland Motors in 1953, and given conventional clutch and gearboxes at the same time. (see pg161 The Leyland Bus by Doug Jack for a picture). ADR813 of the first registration batch was Plymouth 213, renumbered as 141 in 1953, was bought by Theobald's via London dealer Lansdowne in 1959

This was one of the fifty to carry Leyland bodywork from the batch of 83 which entered service in 1939/40, the remainder being built by Crossley(2) or Crossley on Metro Cammell frames(31).

Eastbourne Corporation 12, JK8418, a 1939 Leyland 'Lion' LT8 with Leyland B34F bodywork seen in Compton Street outside the old Devonshire Swimming Baths on 13th June 1967. This was fitted with a Leyland 8.6 litre oil engine in 1954 and re-seated from B32F in 1963. One of five delivered just before the outbreak of World War II, the other four were requisitioned by the War Department and never returned though one (15) still survives, re-registered LMG184.

Scottish Omnibuses HH17, VS3640, seen in Airdrie was a Leyland TD5 with a Leyland L27/26R body which originated with Greenock Motor Services before passing to Western S.M.T. in 1949 and then to Lowland Motorways. It was acquired by Scottish Omnibuses in January 1958 with the Lowland Motorways business.

FFY402 is Southport Corporation Leyland Titan PD2/3, with Leyland engine and Leyland 56 seats (converted to open top 1962). It was one of 12 delivered in 1947 and is a very early example of the PD2 model, indeed the batch was the first to 8 feet width.

Ex-Southport open top Leyland bodied PD2 FFY403 has been working on a sightseeing tour of the Torbay area and is seen here at its loading point in the centre of Torquay on 13th September. It was new with fleet number 86 in 1947 and converted to open-top in 1962 and renumbered 186 in 1973.

Merseyside PTE (Southport District) 187, FFY404, a Leyland Titan PD2/3 with Leyland O30/26R body. New to Southport Corporation in 1947 as its 87, it was converted to open-top in 1962, and renumbered 187 in 1973, before the Corporation was swallowed up by the MPTE in April 1974. Thankfully it has survived and is nowadays part of the North West Museum of Transport's collection at St. Helens.

In April 1964 Shaw Bros., Byers Green acquired HCD904 from Southdown, where it had been number 304. It was a Leyland PD1 with a Leyland H28/26R body new in 1947 and is seen in Spennymoor. After withdrawal in June 1967 it passed to Hartwood Finance (dealer), Barnsley in May 1967 (both dates according to P.S.V. Circle Fleet History PA19).

Eastern National 1116, MNO194, seen at Braintree was new in 1947 and was a Leyland PD1 with a Leyland L27/26R body. It was new as Hicks Brothers 82, but control of Hicks had passed to Eastern National in 1950 after Hicks sold out to the British Transport Commission and it was renumbered 1116 in the 1954 renumbering. In 1955 Hicks Brothers was wound up and the vehicles transferred to the main fleet. In 1961 it was rebuilt to PO33/26R and again renumbered, to 2104, in August 1964.

It was a Leyland PD1A with Leyland L27/26R bodywork new in 1948 to Wemyss Brothers, Ardersier. It passed with the business to W. Alexander in June 1950 and thence to Highland.

Midland Red 4844, GRY763, was a Leyland PD2/1 with a Leyland L27/26R body new as Kemp and Shaw, Leicester number 30 in 1950. It was acquired with the business on January 1st 1959 and was the only lowbridge vehicle in the B.M.M.O. fleet.

This Leyland Titan PD2/12 with lowbridge Leyland body was new to Todmorden JOC in 1951 being one of the last double deckers bought by them. Indeed they bought no new buses for the next decade switching to Leyland Leopards in 1961. Originally 25, KWX18, in Todmorden's fleet it became 356 in the Calderdale fleet in 1971 when Todmorden became part of the Calderdale JOC.

NTF9 was the only example built of the Leyland PD2/15 model. It had a pneumocyclic gearbox and, although built to the 27' length, was built as H30/26R as were the majority of the PD2/10 and PD2/12 models with Leyland bodies and NTF9 remained as such. It was built in 1951 entering use in November 1951 as a Leyland experimental vehicle and demonstrator before being sold in December 1956 to Docherty, Irvine one of the members of the A1 Service.

It is seen here about to set off on one of the Society's outings. Not all of Alexander's Royal Tigers had Alexander 'Coronation' bodies. Ten were bodied by Leyland, of which five were operated by Alexander's (Northern) after the 1961 split. NPC32, DWG528, was one of the latter; a Leyland PSU1/15 with Leyland C41C bodywork, it had been new in 1952 to Walter Alexander & Sons as PC32 and is seen here in the parking area at the side of Aberdeen Bus Station.

Withdrawn in 1963 it passed to F. Cowley (dealer), Salford in September and to Simpson, Rosehearty in October. It became Alexander (Northern) NPC69 in December 1966 when Simpson's business was acquired.

All-Leyland PSU1/13 88, NMN906, was new in 1952 to IOM Road Services but, after withdrawal in 1978, continued in use for staff transport for the railway with IOM National Transport and still survives today, although in fairly poor condition after use as a publicity vehicle and then rally control point.

Salmons (Audawn Coaches), Corringham acquired PNW91 in March 1968 via P.V.S., (dealer), Canvey. It was a Leyland H30/26R bodied Leyland PD2/12, the first of three new to Samuel Ledgard, Armley in February 1952, the last vehicles delivered before his death. Alongside is LYR797, a Leyland 7RT exiled from London Transport, also in the Salmons fleet, in this view taken at Gilwell Park.

The Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company’s number 66 was former Midland Red Leyland PD2/20 4014, SHA414, of 1952, one of four bought by ‘the Swilly’ in 1967 (64-67, SHA419/66/14/21). They lasted until 1975/6, number 66 being withdrawn in 1976 and finally being sold for scrap in March 1978.

Another of the four all-Leyland PD2/20s bought from Midland Red by Lough Swilly in 1967, 67, SHA421, carries the later grey and dark red livery in this 1968 photo at Bridge End, where Northern Ireland meets the Republic on the road from Londonderry/Derry to Letterkenny. It was withdrawn in 1975 and survived on private property until 1992 as a storeshed.

Widnes 25, AEK508, is one of no less than six of these PD2/12s bought by Widnes from Wigan in 1969/70. Their numbering in the Widnes fleet wasn't much less haphazard than at Wigan where fleet numbers of the twelve had ranged from 8 to 99, although the last seven were numbered consecutively.

Preserved Plymouth Corporation 397, HJY297, which was seen at Winkleigh is a Leyland PD2/12 with a Leyland H30/26R body new in late 1953 showing the modifications to the rear platform area. Note also the opening ventilation windows in the rear emergency exit and the rearmost upper deck side window which has been panelled over. This shows also the rear dome rain guttering fitted to Leyland bodies to minimise rainwater from the roof dripping on to the platform entrance area. It is now registered ADV852A.

Rawtenstall 18, RTC822, a 1953 Leyland Titan PD2/12 with Leyland body. This vehicle has been under going extensive renovation in Somerset with Quantock Heritage. It is now at Roger Burdett's site for internal renovation and making ready for painting. I'm told that the big question is what livery is it going to be painted in and it is not Rawtenstall or Barton. We'll just have to wait and see.

As discussed recently, HH was the Eastern Scottish code for this bus and A being the garage code for Edinburgh. Lowland was taken over in 1958. Alongside at Edinburgh bus station is EWS14D.
