An historic scene on Southend Pier as one of the 1949 electric trains heads to the pier head.
The shore end has much changed since this photo was taken in 1974. The Bowling Alley was destroyed by fire in 1995, as was its predecessor, the Pier Pavilion in 1959. The white Palace Hotel has since been refurbished and now has a floor of penthouse suites and part of the Radisson Hotels Group. The Royals shopping centre now dominates the scene. Above all, 3ft gauge diesel units now run along the pier.
