The last time ever in the UK that a tram would pick up passengers in the middle of the road - Blackpool, Sunday November 6, 2011. With the reopening of the reconstructed Blackpool tramway at Easter 2012, this stop is no longer used and on the only remaining street running section, in Fleetwood, trams stop at specially constructed platforms built out into the roadway.
To many, this picture symbolises the very end of the traditional British street tramway, as Centenary car 645 picks up in Lytham Road just outside the depot, at a stop only used by northbound service cars as they entered service, and then rarely at that - but on this occasion, many of us gathered to mark the occasion. Meanwhile a Trident on service 11 waits patiently, unable to pass on the inside.
