Great excitement was caused in February 1987 when RM1571, 571CLT, was hired by Southend Transport from a preservationist. It ran until April 1987 (then briefly reappeared in May) in this rather tatty, "as withdrawn" condition. It entered service on February 7th on the 3A and two days later Peter was the lucky driver on an evening peak 23A from Leigh Station. Why do so many unusual hires always take place in winter with both peaks taking place in the hours of darkness?!!
Southend's own proper RM operations did not commence until September 1988, although more hired RMs were used in November/December 1987 from the London sightseeing fleet.
