NTJ943G is a C20F Plaxton Embassy bodied Bedford J2 SZ10 7T new to Battersbys Silver Grey of Morecambe 5-11-68.
Battersbys was established circa 1947 and seemingly took over Silver Grey, also of Morecambe in the early 1960s. As the business grew in size it had moved to newer and larger premises on White Lund Industrial Estate, but Travellers Choice of Carnforth took over Battersbys Silver Grey in early 2015, after it had encountered financial difficulties.
This coach was with the operator for many years and wore two-tone blue and cream as in the photograph, but it passed into preservation with T. Jackson of Blackpool in 6/97, then Williams of Bangor in 5/08, Tom Newby of Mirfield in 5/10, before its present owner Bryan Male of Daventry bought it in 10/10. He trades as B.W. Male & Sons Furnishers in the Northants town, has restored the coach and repainted it to red/cream and attends rallies in it promoting his business. A recent photo of NTJ943G in its present guise is here.
Surprisingly about 25 of the chassis type are thought to be extant, having later become popular as caravans and with travellers. Plaxton built most of the coach bodies on the J2s, but Duple and Willowbrook provided others.
