JWU881 was a Bristol LL5G with ECW B39R body, new in May 1951 to West Yorkshire Road Car Co, numbered 411.
In April 1954 it was renumbered SGL11. Allocated to Skipton from December 1953, it was one of the first buses to be based at the new depot and bus station on Hebden Road, Grassington, which opened on 2 June 1957. Access to the bus stand visible outside the door was generally by driving through the depot building, entering by a doorway behind the photographer, off Springfield Road, though vehicles did reverse off Hebden Road on occasions.
Note the pit, which is unlikely to have seen much use, yet has a pit cover removed in this view. Grassington was a sub depot of Skipton (which in turn was a sub depot of Keighley) and for several years after opening did not have a separate vehicle allocation.
The initial "regulars" in 1957 were LS5Gs SUG 2/5 and LL5Gs SGL 10/11, but by the time a separate allocation took place, March 1959, the allocation was the unique (to WY) front entrance L5G, SG103, LS5G SUG2 and LL5Gs SGL9/10. Also from that date, SGL11 was transferred from Skipton to Harrogate; it was withdrawn at the end of July 1965 and then had an exciting second life. Sold to Norths, Sherburn, it initially passed to Nicholson, Hunwick, Crook, Co. Durham. On return to Norths in April 1967, they resold it to U.I.Motors, York, who were also dealers, and they in turn sold it to Cork Insulation and Asbestos Ltd, Belfast, in January 1968 as non PSV. It was still running in 1986 and was not finally withdrawn until around 1991, by which time it was 40 years old.
