Bridgemasters and Lowlanders

Southend purchased six AEC Bridgemasters in order to eliminate the traditional upper saloon lowbridge seating layout. This is 319, WHJ430, a 1960 delivery, at Shoebury Common on a duplicate to the town centre.
The thinking was sound but the buses were a limited success. The air suspension could give a good ride but they needed quite a bit of looking after and never really found favour with the operating staff although they did settle in for a few years on the long 3/3A Shoeburyness - Canvey operation.
