LFM316 was an ex-Crosville Leyland PS1/1 with Weymann DP35F body, which entered their fleet in May 1950 as KA240. Part of a batch of 35 (KA225-259) diverted from Midland General, they started life in bus livery, but received cream coach livery with a green waistband in 1952; at some stage they acquired a half cream/half green livery. In May 1958, the batch was renumbered ETE925-959, and in January 1962, they were again renumbered – this time becoming STE925-959 – and reverted to bus livery (all green). LFM316, seen here, was withdrawn in 1964 and passed to Northumberland Whinstone Quarries of Hexham in November of that year, along with sister vehicles LFM301 and LFM324.
LFM316 is seen in the Wentworth Car Park in Hexham during its time with NWQ and, clearly, retained its Crosville number blinds. At that time, the firm owned quarries at Barrasford, Keepershield (between Barrasford and Wark) and Walltown (between Twice Brewed and Greenhead on the Military Road, and close to the Roman Army Museum), and the buses were used to carry workers to and from these isolated places of work. Both Keepershield and the huge Barrasford quarry are still operating today, but under different ownership. Walltown Quarry, opened in 1876 and once the largest on the Roman Wall, producing vast quantities of road chippings, closed in 1976 after exactly 100 years of operation; it has since been landscaped and converted to a nature reserve.
LFM316 remained with NWQ until 1968, and, by November of that year, along with sister vehicle LFM301, had passed to Willington Car Metal Co of Wallsend as lorries. LFM316 was recorded as still owned by them in the following November but, after that, I’m afraid the trail goes cold.
