In the paint shop on 1st February 1982 is Blackpool 390, CFR590C. Blackpool's PD3s became quite famous in their later years in a green and cream livery and it may be surprising to realise that this first repaint into anything other than all over cream was as late as 1982.
Back in 1980, David had sketched a few different liveries on drawings of these buses and this style, copied from that carried by the Balloons at the time (as seen on the left) was agreed. However, that coincided with a big gap in the repainting programme and it took some time for one to appear so adorned. 390 was the oldest bus in the fleet at the time and its livery remained unique. The next bus painted was 540, the last of the PD3s which carried the style eventually adopted. After that 512 was treated to a third variant but only came out of the paint shop for a few minutes before returning to receive the 540 style. Note 390 is at an early stage of painting - the masking tape for the lower deck green can be seen across the front.
