The lettering says it all. On Sunday 26 March 1972 Bradford 844, FWX914, performed the final journeys carrying the civic party to close the Bradford trolleybus system.
As was well documented at the time the miners strike had seen trolleybuses suspended in early 1972 and only the determination of all involved ensured that trolleybuses resumed in March so the final swansong could occur. Unfortunately this situation meant that the orginal intention to fully repaint a genuine Bradford vehicle for the closure was vetoed and 844 which had been repainted in 1971, the last trolleybus so treated, was cleaned and lettered at the last minute once the resumption of power was assured.
It is seen approaching Thornbury works with the depot in the background followed by a tower wagon which had accompanied it thoughout the run.
Having left Thornbury at 1440 and collected the civic party at the Town Hall at 1455 the last tour had departed the Odeon in Thornton Road at 1500 and travelled via Thornton, Squire Lane, Duckworth Lane, City Centre and Leeds Road to Thornbury for 1615. I was fortunate to be given a photocopy of the driver's (Frederick L Kelly) running board after the event by friends working at BCT.
